'Please let the world know'

Her name was Neda Salehi Agha Soltan. She was born in 1982. She died on 20 June, 2009.

Now that she has been identified and her remains blessed and buried, this blog can bear to post a video (scroll down) and stills of her last moments, with apologies to her family, for the sake of justice. Warning: the final image may stay with you the rest of your life.

This email was posted with the original video:

'Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st.
A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basji member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had a clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However he aimed straight at her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.'

Later, information was posted by someone close to the family clarifying that she was at the protest with one of her professors (update: her music teacher) and several other students. She was, they said, shot by a basiji riding by on a motorcycle.

Whether he was her father or her professor, her companion is shouting, 'Neda, don't be afraid. Neda, don't be afraid. Neda, stay with me. Neda, Stay with me!'

Her name means 'voice' or 'calling.'

A memorial service was cancelled upon orders from the authorities.
